Quick answer
The car-care habits that most often ruin new window tint are household glass cleaner with ammonia, rolling windows down before the film cures, pressure washing or steaming door edges, aggressive detail products on the inside glass, and scraping stickers off with a blade. All five are avoidable with a one-page aftercare card.
A perfect install can be undone in a week by ordinary car maintenance. This clip is the list the Onyx team gives customers, so the film they paid for looks the same at year five as it did at hour five.
Key takeaways
- Ammonia glass cleaner is the number one cause of hazed and lifted film.
- Windows down in the first three days drags the felt across uncured adhesive.
- Pressure wands and steam at door edges drive water under the film.
- Nothing survives a blade. Stickers come off with a plastic razor and ammonia-free cleaner.
Cleaners with ammonia
The most common one. Household glass cleaner on the inside of the window hazes and lifts film. Ammonia-free only, and sprayed onto the cloth, not the glass. What the shop itself should use on the day of install is in final steps: glass cleaner and conditioner.
Windows down too soon
Rolling a window down in the first days drags the felt across uncured adhesive and lifts the edge. Three days minimum, longer in cold weather.
Pressure washers and detail shops
A pressure wand aimed at a door edge from the inside of an open door drives water under the film. Detailers using steam or aggressive interior cleaners on the glass are the second most common cause of edge lift we see.
Sharp objects and seat belts
Scraping a sticker off the inside of the glass, or a buckle swinging into the rear quarter, both cut film. The scratch-resistant hard coat on Onyx Ceramic helps, but nothing survives a blade.
Sun, heat and parking
Fresh film cures faster in the sun, so a car parked outside in summer is fine. What hurts is a hot car with the windows cracked open in the first days: the felt sits against uncured adhesive at the top edge for hours. Keep the windows fully up. In winter, a garage or a few hours of afternoon sun helps the cure along; a week of cold, damp nights slows it.
What goes on the aftercare card
One page, large type, handed over at the counter. Front: windows up for three days (a week in cold weather), ammonia-free cleaner on a microfibre only, no pressure washing or steam at the door edges for two weeks, expect light haze and small water pockets that clear as the film cures. Back: the shop's number, the roll ID from the invoice, and the lifetime warranty line. The roll ID is what lets the shop trace the film later; how that works is in inside the Onyx warehouse.
Film that forgives the customer
No film survives ammonia or a blade, but construction changes how forgiving the years are. Onyx Carbon is fade-proof and stays true black instead of turning purple. Onyx Ceramic and Ceramic+ add a scratch-resistant hard coat and keep their heat rejection (80% and 96% IR at 5% VLT) for the life of the film. All three carry a lifetime warranty.

Questions shops ask
Does ceramic film handle this better than dyed film?
Its hard coat resists scuffs better and it will not fade purple, but ammonia and edge lift affect every film. The rules are the same.
What about tinted rear windows with defrosters?
Never scrape the inside of a defroster glass. A plastic razor and ammonia-free cleaner if something needs removing.
What should a shop hand the customer?
A printed aftercare card. Most comebacks are avoidable with one paragraph the customer actually reads.
Can the customer take the car through a car wash?
Yes, after the first three days. Automatic washes clean the outside of the glass and do not touch the film. Hand washes with a pressure wand at open door edges are the risk.
